Deathcon 2027 is a game about a volcano erupting suddenly and without much warning. Normally for our characters, we can see that there is a ‘big gathering’ or trade meet happening in a unique location that we can prepare for months in advance. Having the in-character narrative turn so suddenly is part of the experience that we want to provide for you.
So what do you know in-character?
For most of you, you have heard the call to come to St. Locusta for a faith festival. Once a year, the residents and locals of St. Locusta climb Glacier Peak in order to conduct faith rituals at the peak of the mountain. Every pillar faith is present and the Sainthood are the most dominant as they are the ones who have been doing this the longest. This year, all of the faiths have made radio broadcasts, wandering priests, and flyers of all types for the faithful to come to St. Locusta. Some who are tied to their faith via psionics may have even seen visions of a great festival in a sleepy mountain town. No matter how you have heard of it, it sounds like a wonderful time. There will always be challenges and trials on the road to get there, so preparing for the worst of the wastelands is a perfectly fine thing to do leading up to Deathcon. For those uninterested in faith but hold a criminal connection to Murder Incorporated, there is rumor that the town is home to the region's Sin Dictate who is looking to pass on secret knowledge, lost arts of assassination, and perhaps make connections to those who rank highly inside the secret order.
We want everyone who wants to come to the event to find a reason to go. We are happy to help invent a reason, and we will be publishing a cross-plot plotkit that any chapter can utilize to build tension, hype, and a solid reason to go to St. Locusta for your characters. We do want to avoid any character saying in the play space ‘I want to go get melted in the lava lake’ as that will not happen until about four days before the event in April. Instead, your character could ‘have a bad feeling about the festival’ and want to go check it out for themselves, want to keep their friends safe, or any other thing we can think of.
Having a faith festival be turned on its heels into a literal pit of fire and brimstone just days before is the whole point of the event. We go for something beautiful and spiritually awakening and we end up fighting for our very survival. In April, we are gonna explore what it means to find hope in the shadow of the volcano.
